Canine Distemper
Investigators in Germany have developed a new test of the laboratory to help in the diagnosis of canine distemper. The method of the laboratory normally used today, in the United States, is called Virus Neutralizing Assay.
This test expensive and is prolonged. The new test is an enzyme together with a inmunoabsorbente (ELISA) that identifies the antibodies to the virus. The test is made with a blood sample.
The evaluation of this new procedure continues, and the test is not still available for the massive use in the United States.
Commentaries:
Canine distemper is a rare disease in the United States due to the excellent vaccines that have been developed to prevent it, although not thus in Latin America where the insidencia of the disease is greater. The vaccines have been used widely during many years, obtaining a reduction in the frequency of this disease. The cases of distemper canine, nevertheless, happen and an express of exact diagnosis would be beneficial for the treatment.
The test also can be used to evaluate the levels of the antibodies of the vaccinated dogs to determine if the animal has sufficient protection or would need a revaccination.
